WHAT NEXT AFTER RN [SERIES 2]

‘People often complain about lack of time when the lack of direction is the real problem.’ Zig Ziglar
I started a series three weeks ago specifically for those who are just entering the profession and can’t wait any longer to be called a NURSE.
In the quest to have a fulfilling career in the profession, many nurses seek to leave the shores of their countries to where the nursing practice is more rewarding and appealing. Opportunities for a rewarding career in the profession  really abound in the western world; countries such as Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, and the United States of America have become haven for nurses. However, the various hurdles set by the different nursing regulatory agencies/boards of these countries need to be crossed first in order to be able to practice in one of them.
For others, who may choose to stay in their home countries for the love of their father land or as a result of an inability to cross the hurdles set by foreign nursing regulatory agencies, work opportunities abound in both private and public sectors within the country. Churches, schools, private homes, multinational agencies such as Shell, Exxon, NNPC, PHCN, & more, and government hospitals at both Local, State, and Federal hospitals are common places where nurses can find work. Nursing has been proven as a recession proof profession; it is one of the few profession that will continue to be in high demand worldwide in spite of the economic crisis.
The fulcrum upon which professional development rests is on a higher and continuing education. Respondents to a post by Miss Olofinlade Olubunmi on my group ‘21st Century Nurses group on facebook ’ on the first line of action or priority needed for new era of the nursing profession, all agreed that education is the ‘key’ to unlock the potential of nurses as it affects the professional development in our practice. For all, I think obtaining a university degree should be your next line of thought. For those without a complete SSCE result, it’s not too late, go back to the drawing board, dust that Physics textbook of yours, call even your junior brother or sister to teach you Mathematics, enrol for a tutorial class to complement your Chemistry skill, you can if only you want to. With more universities starting B.Nsc programs, you can choose to earn your degree through one of the various ways which include: distance learning mode, absolutely online, part time or full time [check my next week post for details].
Now that you know, you have no excuse to remain a mediocre, start now by setting your plans, work towards them, seek information, make those calls, obtain that form, don’t stay stagnate, keep moving. Till then, see you at the top.
